Rourke was great in it, as was Lance Henriksen and Morgan Freeman. It's sad that no one hires Walter Hill to direct these days, that man ruled the last half of the 70's and all through the 80's, and for some reason then just started to fall through the cracks in the 90's, despite making the odd cool film or tales from the crypt ep in that decade as well. I guess the pussification of hollywood and the nigh-on extinction of r-rated testosterone laden action films pretty much killed his career.

It's owned by the founder of Cinefile Video, the single best place to rent movies from in the U.S. and it retains the same eclectic spirit that characterizes that place. Where else can you find Miike and Elliot Gould retrospectives? Or witness the rebirth of "I Know Who Killed Me" as a cult classic?

Damn!... talk about a blast from the past. I remember seeing it in the theatre back in '89. A fine coda to Mickey Rourke's run of great work in 80's indy movies. Sort of a hybrid of "The Elephant Man" and film noir. Some excellent support from Lance Henricksen and Ellen Barkin. There's one scene between Morgan Freeman and Forrest Whittaker that comes off like a Mexican standoff between two of the best black actors ever. Not a great movie, but very solid nonetheless. Thank God it's on DVD; as I do not live in the L.A. area, I'm gonna have to buy it, and enjoy it all over again.

...the finest piece of screen acting he ever saw was the scene where Mickey Rourke sees his reconstructed face in JOHNNY HANDSOME. All this, plus Ellen Barkin doing slutty and an awesome Cooder score.

This was totally completely superlatively FREAKIN’ awesome! It was like a mini Butt-Numb-A-Thon in its eclecticism and the audience’s energy. A hint of the atmosphere: between all movies smoke machines filled the theatre and music from vinyl records played. Things began with the classic Richard Pryor: Live In Concert. It was invigorating watching this with a laughing audience having only seen in on video. Next—Baby The Rain Must Fall from 1965 starring Lee Remick and Steve McQueen. I nodded off during this so I’ll refrain from comments. Boxer’s Omen—Holyfuckingshit this the most surreal sublimely wonderfully fucked up movie I’ve seen since Aachi & Ssipak and Exte: Hair Extensions at Fantastic Fest last September. Boxer’s Omen is a 1983 Shaw Brothers horror movie that has to be seen to be believed. It practically begs to be shown at BNAT. The next screening is top secret. I hate to be a tease, but seriously, I’m afraid of bringing legal action against the fine folks at The Cinefamily if the title is revealed. The promised 1989 Johnny Handsome played next. I hadn’t seen it since it hit video eons ago. It holds up very well with a solid if predictable story with a fantastic cast and no nonsense direction from Walter Hill. It justly deserves discovery by new audiences. Film Noir lovers take note. Lastly the 35 minutes “The End” from 1953 rolled. It’s an experimental film directed by notable beat poet Christopher Maclaine that is rarely screened. Also during the course of the long evening, two Looney Tunes cartoons manifested. Long cinematic evenings like this are like coming home for me. It’s like I’ve always been there and can’t wait to get back again. Thanks Nick and Hadrien!!! Until next time. :)

I don't need to say much cause Psychedelic pretty much covered it. there is one noticeable oversight in his post though. The FREE BEER! Yeah the movies were fun and the beer was fucking free. Don't get no better than that. I didn't see Mori there though,alas, worlds could have collided. Thanks to all the incredibly generous and cool folks at the Silent Movie Theater. On the way out I overheard Nicky saying they might do a monster movie night. You can count me right in on that and probably a few shows in between.
