While i do appreciate you mentioning this Capone, in the future, it would be beneficial if you gave more than a days notice if possible. These small festivals need as much hype and push as they can get! Most people have made their holiday plans by now and are locked in.

Er...just got back from RE-reading music box's website and realize it runs for a week, so sorry about that, thought it was limited to a weekend(as it was previous times no?)

Yompi was just stupid

I couldn't believe how many of the shorts this time around resorted to such tasteless measures to get laughs, i.e. many of the shorts ending with an abrupt gunshot to the head after several minutes of unfunny nonsense, or the trying-far-too-hard-to-be-a-cu lt-classic Yompi. And I actually loved Quackenbush's Ricardo. That's not to say that there weren't gems in the mix, like Paintballing and Western Spaghetti. but they were too few and too far between. All I can say is that I hope there are people out there that like to be bombarded by A.D.D., spastic storytelling and cheap laughs and immediately after love being bored to death listening to a painfully static romantic squabble between fucking Arctic creatures with English accents sipping tea. PASS.

"Steve Dildarian's "The Life and Times of Tim," which is being turned into a series for HBO."

Sweet christ. The one short that did what I thought was the impossible: in 6 minutes of trying desperately to make me laugh, actually forced my passive lips into a disgruntled scowl gets a show deal, and with HBO? What the fuck? Never has one solitary but monumental display of talentlessness elicited such anger. And I thought the purpose of these festivals was to display the cream of the crop in shorts animation, not the turd in its pants.

Spike & Mike redux?

I dunno, with Hertzfeldt gone it sounds like a Spike & Mike style grossout-fest, or at least it seems to be trending that way. At least it's still got Plympton and PES.
It's Bill Plympton...

...with a "y" and he's a genius. Hand draws every frame, unlike the flash animators of today. Check out some of his work on dvd or youtube. I hope Capone is calling it "some fairly crude drawings" as in "his frequent storylines and jokes borders crude," and not "his animation style and artwork are crude"... cause that would be bullshit. True artist in animation.

I watched it Wed. night it was brilliant. Perfect casting, perfect pacing, wonderfully evocative composition of shots and hell of and ending. Light and L are portrayed perfectly and the pre-end is and the end stunning. I wanted to go straight into the second Death Note movie. Anyone know when that will be in the states.
congrats Mike Judge!

I saw the show at the Alamo. It was awesome! PES's short was worth the price of admission alone. I haven't laughed at an animation show since the first one. There were no boring 15 minute pretentious crappers like last year. Steve Dildarian's Life of Tim one FUNNY! So much better than Spke&Mke ever was. I hope Mike Judge keeps doing these each year.
Not bad, but not great

It was just meh. There's a few cool toons in there but way more clunkers than usual. Its the weakest Animation Show I've seen but even the weakest Animation Show kicks Spike n Mike's ass all over the block any day.
The best there is!

I thought there was a lot of the rabbit shorts in there that would be my only complaint. Those were over in a second though. I remember reading last years review here on aintitcool and talkback haters dissed some shorts too. I didn't write in cause i respect what don and mike are doing for independent filmmakers. The paintball short capone talked about on the big screen was mesmerizing. Mike Judge brings the only game in town.

What bugged me most was the lack of any artistic (or emotional) highs in there. I like the snarky flash toons OK but after awhile they all string together and seem like they're made by people who mainly want to be stand-up comics instead of animators. It's still definitely worth checking out, it's just not the same as it used to be.

what? my girlfriend cried during the Forgeting peice, the paintball one isnt like anything i've seen on a movie screen and our audience gasped at the paint on glass one. I laughed a million times more than ANY other animated movie i've seen since south park. Thank you CAPONE for writing about this. Ignore the talkback haters Mike Judge is doing an awesome thing here and people just want to crap on him for it.

Having seen the previous animation shows and being aware of the genius that is Don Hertzfeld's vision, I can't really say a good thing about this collection of recycled MTV/AdultSwim style horse shit. Individually, there were a few great pieces. Namely: Jeu, the only piece that I felt adhered to the original principles that guided the brilliant animation shows of yore. And of course the Plympton piece was good as usual. The rest of the "good ones" were mediocre at best, but seemed "good" in comparison to the gutter trash that surrounded them. Overall, as an ANIMATOR I would be ashamed to have my piece shown in the same festival that showed such cheap shots as Yompi, Psychotown, or Angry Unpaid Hooker. The opening piece says it all: pirates hijacking the animation show. The lack of Hertzfeld in this festival revealed the inevitable truth that Mike Judge is artistically a step above the guy who draws a penis on a bathroom stall. My advice, don't waste your money. You can catch most of these online already and be slightly less irritated knowing that you didn't make a trip to the theatre expecting to see Fallen Art, The Meaning of Life or Das Rad to be intellectually and artistically insulted by Yompi the Cockbiting piece of shit.
