The trailer's don't make it look that great. The fact that they don't have a dozen shots of crazy mindblowing stuff happening means the chances of this just being a really great, long episode of X-Files is more likely. The less 'blockbustery' an X-Files movie looks, the better it means for the fans.

I was a bit worried to see Chris Carter writing and directing... he was personally behind some of the goofiest mytharc stuff and a couple really weak episodes (for the record, I don't find "The Post-Modern Prometheus" to be a particularly effective episode, though "Triangle" works pretty well). Still, looking at these clips fills me with hope. I can't understand the comments about it looking cheap like a cash grab... To me, the look of it feels very true to what made the X-files great... atmospheric and very deeply grounded in the real world. It's true that the exchange between Mulder and Scully which appears in one of the clips happened in the show about every other episode till season 6, but pay attention to the way they play it. There's something about both of them which evokes the fact that they have a very painful history with this exact sort of situation. It feels to me almost like Marge's videotape from the Simpsons Movie... yeah, we've heard it a million times, but that actually makes us pay a bit of attention when it seems like they REALLY mean it. Hence, the clips and the trailer actually make me very hopeful about this thing... and it doesn't hurt that Billy Connelly looks like a perfect fit for the universe... rough and crazy but very firmly real. My advice is, forget the admittedly bitter letdown which ended the mytharc and remember the real reasons we watched X-files... great characters , atmosphere, and awesome monster moments. Even as late as seasons 8 and 9, there are some spectacular episodes... Give this thing a chance to remind you of the love!

im there. doesnt matter that the whole movie looks like it was shot in the same 2 block radius, i dont mind seeing mulder and scully on the screen again. shit, i wouldnt mind them goin back to the tv show after this movie. THAT would be fuckin AWESOME.

I am a fan from the series, have all episodes on DVD. The best ones, from season 1-4 were the "monsters of the week" and for all I saw until now it has the looks and feel of a good "monster of the week" story. let's hope it is enough to make a good movie, as the first one - Fight the Future - wasn't that great.

There are no spectacular episodes in Seasons 8 or 9. There aren't even any watchable ones. As for these clips, the dialogue is so wincingly on the nose that it pains me to hear it. Again, this is proof positive that the only talented writers on the show were either named Morgan or Wong.

I'm not terribly impressed. I'd be surprised if this movie is better than Fight the Future. I know this is a small budget movie, but having Chris Carter as the director is not helping it one bit. The dialogue in that scene is just wrong, it's not something I think Scully would say, and Duchovny looks apathetic (no surprise there). I'll be there on opening day, but like the poster above said, the more they show the less interesting it becomes.

i mean, im a huge x-file dork (or was one back in the day..guess my obssesions moved to 'Lost' now) i went to the conventions and everything, so theres no doubt ill be seeing this..but..man, i was little disappointed in hearing 'this is about your sister!'.. like, jesus, how many times are they going to wrap that story line up? they given about 7 different explainations, or endings to that subject. i know the disappearance of mulder's sister is what drove him to the x-files in the first place, but if this is going to be like a stand alone episode with small traces of the mythology sprinkled in, i hope the sister part is played down, only because we've seen it..numerous times.. christ, while you're at it bring back the cigarette smoking man (who was only killed about 5 times in the series..but FOR REAL on the last episode..heh.)

The show lost whatever vision it had at least three seasons before it bowed and the movie was the same tiredness from the show: Them chasing their own asses to find proof of a conspiracy we all knew existed only to have any appreciable proof subverted and another just as large conspiracy already in place to replace the one they had 'exposed'.

I'll make this statement. X-files paved the way for a show like Lost. (throw in a little twin peaks too) but unlike when tangent tim kring says he learned from his mistakes and is going to fix heroes according (which he didnt,) Lost really did learn the mistakes of X-files and is staying true to a vision, with a begining, and compelling middle, and hopefully a satisfying end. you cant blame the X-file writers too much..if they would have ended at season 6, it would have been regarded as almost perfect.. but it was still successful so they kept going after the story reached its conclusion. sure Lost has some less than perfect episodes, and sometimes you can tell they're streching the story, but after the stellar, and almost flawless season 4 it nice to know they ABC gave in and let them have an ending at season 6. so thank the failures of X-files, for the success of Lost.

I know people usually say it should have ended with season 6 but there was still room for one more great season, and IMO season 7 IS that great season it's just that they should have gone into it thinking it was the LAST and not wondering what the fuck they were going to do when Duchovny left at the end of it. When he left the series should have ended. It would be like if 24 continued with Bauer appearing in around 6 of the 24 episodes. Bad idea. Season 7 had some great standalones but the overall arc was bullshit because it had basically ended in 6.

I was a huge x-files fan back in the day. And like many of us, I was saddened by the (slow) end of the show with the departure of Duchovny and the deteriorating story lines. as much as I'd like to be excited about an x-files project coming back online - nothing that I've seen of this movie has me the least bit interested. Quite the opposite really. Looks pretty boring. I'm still holding out hope for TDK being really - the only good movie of the summer after the abysmal disappointment of Indiana Jones.

I agree completely that the failures of both X-Files and Twin Peaks helped pave the way for the great compromise between ABC and Lost. By the time Twin Peaks reached its second season there was a little too much padding (remember James running around on his motorcycle because I wish I didn't). Likewise, X-Files kept on going until they started cannibalizing themselves. I would suggest that another major difference between how each series was handled is because of DVDs. ABC realized that if they make Lost short and sweet, they can probably profit much more on DVD sales because people will be more willing to buy a memorable series whose quality didn't diminish in later years. I don't think a show like Lost, with the amount of time and energy it takes to understand, could even happen without the convenience of home viewing. More than anything else I think DVDs have changed television for the better.

But I disagree. Those three Season 9 eps you listed are all utterly atrocious, filled with poor writing and half-assed performances. Calling them "great" is an insult to the truly great episodes of Seasons 1-4. Once again, without exception, there are NO good eps in the last two seasons.

"Roadracers", "Patience", "Invocation"...all of these had that classic, scary seasons 1-5 tone to them. I'm just four episodes from wrapping up the much-derided season 9 (I got a steal on the giant X-Files boxed set with all nine seasons and the first movie), and, yeah, that year was the weakest, but even then there were a few scattered bits of quality ("4D", "Daemonicus", "Underneath", "Audrey Pauley", although that last one was very similar to the Amazing Stories episode "Dorothy & Ben"). Granted, the "Supah Soljah" period of the mytharc was the dumbest of them all (I find it impossible to believe an entire body can be reconstructed entirely from a little, metallic vertabre). Still, the show had far more good episodes than bad, and I'm really looking forward to the new movie.

a long time ago i had some info on 'the phantom menace' before it came out, and before we knew it would suck, so everyone was excited about every bit of minutiae we could get out hands on. anyway, i learned at some comicon signing that anakin would have a rodian friend (what a joke that turned out to be) so i wrote into 'aicn' and the old 'coming soon' sites about it and how i went straight home and wrote to my favorite 'internets.' which i meant to type 'internet sites' but im prone to typos. both sites printed my info verbatim, and i thought it was funny, so the next pointless bit off info i sent into a few movies site i wrote about printing them on the internets. then apparently george bush ripped me off. but i was totally first, go ahead and prove me wrong!

the stand alone episodes from season 8 are great. Scully and doggett(who is very likeable) investigating some scary shit. Unlike season seven which is fucking awfull.

I'm glad to see there are a few folks out there willing to give the surprisingly decent season 8 and 9 a chance. Admittedly, season 9 probably has more weak episodes than good ones... but even there, a few patches of genuinely good episodes which hold their own with the rest of the series. I even like the addition of Dogget to the show... Robert Patrick works really well in the universe, and the character makes a good match for a Scully who finally (finally!) can't deny the obvious any more. Less so agent Reyes, but still... I don't think anyone can really argue that the mytharc didn't basically end in season 6, but great stand-alone episodes are always welcomed as far as I'm concerned. Actually, truth be told, I was glad for a return to some scary, violent weirdness in season 8 after the overload of silliness in seasons 6 and 7 (I love goofy episodes like "Jose Chung's...", but come on, by the time we got to "Rain King" it had pretty well played out). I think a lot of people really got burned bad by the mytharc fizzling out, and that turned em away from seeing the fun the show still had in it.
