there is some sweet looking shit right there

man those dog fights look good. battle of Britain good. it's actually sweet how they have used animation do shit that you prob couldn't do in real life, vis a vis camera angles ect. these all look sweet. spring time for hitler! but honestly for fucks sake, aussie film has always been a runt running on the smell of an oily rag. 'oh aussie film has had a rough trot lately but it used to be good' bulshit it was always backyard affairs. some of our best films are zero budget types. watch the castle for example. shot in 11 days, one of the most iconic aussie films ever. there has never been an golden age of aussie film perse , just a stack of films rising above themselves: eg shine

I saw Tropa De Elite at the Los Angeles Film Festial under the title Elite Squad. From the tough drug dealing streets of Rio—comparisons to City Of God seem inevitable—comes this very good story from the cop’s point of view. A captain in BANO, the titular elite squad with training equal to Special Forces, is burning out because of his first child’s imminent birth. He’s become too wary of not wanting to take a bullet. So he scouts for a replacement. Two candidates are followed. The first third tells their stories leading to recruitment, then tough physical and mental training follow with the last third accounting first days on the job. Jose Padilha, Braulio Mantovani, and Rodrigo Pimentel’s script is terrific and Padilha’s direction is solid. It’s startling how widespread and institutionalized police corruption is. At one point dirty cops collect “protection fees” from a restaurant like mobsters. Ironically, the squad is fascist often throwing due process out the window. The captain continually rants against corruption when his actions, including torture, could be considered worse. The framing device at the beginning feels shop worn. But bottom line: This movie is damn good, action packed and high energy!

No kidding, I have a five month old boy. That shit's hard after you become a parent. ... On the other hand I've forgotten how many interesting films this world produces that aren't being shoved down my throat by an American corporation. I need to broaden my horizons.

I've never even heard of Ram Gopal Varma or Eric Poppe before reading this. There's so much to get excited about reading that list of projects. Awesome as always, guys.

You are all gonna love it. Ad heads up for the Oscar, eh, if Weinstein does what he does every year, and if Ledger goes in as Supporting Actor rather than lead, Wagner Moura, actor who plays Capt. Nascimento, the main police officer in the movie, is going to be one of the favorites to gnawing the statue.
