Frank Miller's THE SPIRIT.
THE SPIRIT is a film that I kinda enjoyed in spite of a great many problems. And even as I enjoyed what I did enjoy, I recognize that what I did enjoy about it would probably rub almost everyone else wrong.
Frank Miller's SPIRIT is Frank's attempt to do justice to one of his heroes' works. The film LOOKS gorgeous, although the aesthetic isn't right for the material. Going the SIN CITY route - for what cried out to be a technicolor super noir... well, it made me a bit sad, although graphically it does look spectacular.

I am – Hercules!!
Before we present the lovely and talented Alexandra DuPont’s typically thorough and articulate appraisal of Frank Miller’s “The Spirit” (opening nationwide Christmas Day) I am compelled to give a shout-out to Scott Hoffman over at moviepicturefilm.com, who provided all the quotes for the “Spirit” TV spots we’ve been seeing. They look a lot like this:
ONE OF THE BEST
FILMS OF THE YEAR
FULL OF JAW-

Merrick here...
Yesterday, we received a review of THE SPIRIT from a reader who called it the worst film he'd ever seen (HERE).

Merrick here...
So, as you may know, Frank Miller's adaptation of THE SPIRIT has been getting kicked around a bit (HERE is one example).
You can get a better sense of the film for yourself from six scenes that are newly posted over at BlackFilm.
See them...

Merrick here...
Ms. H got a look at Frank Miller's SPIRIT adaptation, which hits theaters on Christmas Day. Hearing some lackluster word on this one - Ms. H's message pretty much supports those assessments.
ANd, yes, I know the blue highlight box around the review is ginormous...can't seem to shrink it down for some reason.
Saw The Spirit and thought I'd give you some feedback.

Hey folks, Harry here... FINALLY - a quasi coherent trailer for THE SPIRIT that gets me hopped up and anxious to see whatever Frank Miller has done to the great Will Eisner's greatest creation. I can tell you now, Frank has done his own thing to it, and yeah, there's a part of me that hates that, but at the same time - had Frank come out with a Comic in his art style of THE SPIRIT - and it was a complete reinvention I would have eagerly sought it out. This is just Frank doing his thing in a different medium... I just hope it rocks!

Merrick here...
VoicesOffCamera sent us this write-up after seeing an advanced screening of Frank Miller's big screen adaptation of THE SPIRIT.
Remember that the film isn't scheduled to hit theaters for a while, so it's highly likely numerous changes will be/could be made to the version seen by VOC before THE SPIRIT's final iteration materializes in December.
Here's VoicesOffCamera...

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Looks like the good folks at Film School Rejects got their grubby little mitts on the next trailer for Frank Miller's adaptation of Will Eisner's THE SPIRIT.

Just like the headline says. The pic comes to us via The San Diego Comic Con magazine which is available online in .pdf form
For your instant gratification (or...not), here's a considerably smaller version of the image from the document:

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Lionsgate has bumped up Frank Miller's adaptation of Will Eisner's THE SPIRIT out of 2009. It's now hitting Christmas Day '08. My guess is to get as much distance between it and WATCHMAN as possible, both are going to be hard edged comic book movies aimed at older geeks (meaning not children).
I'm very curious about this one. Hope it's good.

Hey folks, Harry here... I was completely flummoxed by the anti-Frank Miller tone of Quint's talkback on his unveiling of the poster for Frank Miller's THE SPIRIT. I've grown up with THE SPIRIT - but then my parents ran the first Comic Book shop in Austin - and my house has always had more golden age comics than I've ever seen in any comic shop in the country... Will Eisner was revered in my home - Maybe I'm on crack - but I fucking love FRANK MILLER. He's a giant. And here you have Frank Miller's THE SPIRIT. Not Will Eisner's.

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I am very curious about this movie. I want it to be good. I loved SIN CITY and would love to see Frank Miller continue on with that trend and make a kick-ass flick.
I like the poster campaign so far. We'll see what the final result will be, but to hold you over I have for you gentle and kind readers the first look at the official teaser poster for THE SPIRIT. It will debut at the NYCC, I'm told, but you get it a day early. Click it for the higher res version! Enjoy!

Some (unsanctioned) character shots from Frank Miller's forthcoming adaptation of THE SPIRIT appeared briefly online not too long ago, then disappeared rather quickly.
Some not-particularly-revelatory "official" shots appeared shortly thereafter...but they didn't really give us a sense of, well, much at all.

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Last week Dark Horizons ran a bunch of unauthorized raw behind the scenes pics from Frank Miller's Will Eisner's THE SPIRIT. Lotsa greenscreen there... and they got pulled pretty quickly. I'm guessing Lionsgate has had these authorized ones rushed out to give everybody a more solid idea of what the film will look like. It's not much, but I gotta say that's an absolutely gorgeous shot of Scarlett Johansson's purty face.
Anyway, here they be! Enjoy!

Hey folks, Harry here... thanks for all the well wishes - but frankly doing AICN is what has gotten me through the hardest of times - I love it. I love sharing fun stuff with all of you. Not too long ago I got sent THE SPIRIT widget on FACEBOOK - so I've decided to share it with all of you. It's counting down and telling us that THE SPIRIT IS ON THE WAY... and if that means trailer... I'm so fucking ready. Here ya go...

Quint here again... That didn't last long. Pics removed at request of Lionsgate, both here and at Dark Horizons. I'm sure glad none of our readers would save these pics...
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. The pimp daddy Garth Franklin at Dark Horizons got a great bunch of images from the shooting of THE SPIRIT, directed by Frank Miller from his adaptation of Will Eisner's character. Get 'em while you can!

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.
I haven’t been to ShoWest in a lot of years now, but part of the fun of it was seeing all the poster art that got premiered there and all the theater standees that they’re going to be sending out soon.
Looks like the guys over at IESB are already there and snapping photos of everything. They got some good stuff that I hadn’t seen before, like this one for Frank Miller’s THE SPIRIT...

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Anybody that has seen any of Frank Miller’s work knows he enjoys the female form and damnit if he’s not going whole-hog into THE SPIRIT with some of the most attractive women in show business.
He already has Scarlett Johansson and Eva Mendes. Now he’s signed on SIN CITY alum Jaime King and Paz Vega. Paz will be playing Plaster of Paris, a knife wielding French nightclub dancer and Jaime is Lorelei, a phantom siren.

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Damn, Frank Miller must be on cloud nine right about now. First Scarlett Johansson and now Eva Mendes as femme fatales... Sam Jackson as the villain... the head of the Monster Squad as The Spirit (well, technically... since Gabriel Macht is Stephen Macht's son... and Stephen Macht was Sean's dad in MONSTER SQUAD... anybody?)
Eva Mendes will play Sand Saref, the Spirit's ex-flame.
Mendes and Johansson in a Frank Miller movie... good lord... Are there any red-blooded hetero readers that doesn't love how this movie is looking?

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with a short phone interview I conducted with Sam The Man Jackson. I got the chance to talk to him a little about his upcoming drama RESURRECTING THE CHAMP about an old homeless man who claims to be a long lost boxing legend. He tells his story to an up and coming reporter and a story is written. But then this man’s true identity is called into question.
Of course, I couldn’t help but sneak in some questions about NICK FURY and THE SPIRIT. I get probably one of the most spectacular dodges in any interview I’ve ever done. Enjoy the interview and watch for a couple clips of amazing SOUND-O-TEXT!!!

Hey folks, Harry here... with all the daft decisions in the land of LaLas recently - here's one that's just right! Frank Miller has the eye for the curves, the face and the look of femme fatales. He's conjured them out of ink and paper - and in bringing them to life, he's chosen perfectly in casting Scarlett as the femme in this adaptation.
I can't wait to see how he casts THE SPIRIT himself... but this was a great second step - remember, he cast Sam Jackson as The Octopus - and I'd kill to read this script, I bet it's bleeding brilliant.
How do you want to see this film brought to life?
